The 870 has a milled steel receiver while the 500 has a forged aluminum.Tim, Remington's website shows exactly 1/2 lb. difference between the two - that's actually quite a bit, in my opinion, just for the occasional 3-1/2" capability. Used 870's are definitely the way to go. There's very little that can be "wrong" with a pump shotgun and only a slim chance that you'd get a dud.I know the Benelli Nova Tactical comes with ghost ring sights that are very slug-friendly, which can be a plus sincemost indoor ranges allow them only.
